I think a spellchecker would completely mute some members of the Guild Wars community.

"i choz tgot sum plats fer my rang wth fooken bad azz bo cuz"

In all honesty though, a spellchecker is a bit excessive for a chat interface. I like to type properly, but it doesn't have to be shakespear. I suggest you invest in nightvision. Or a little light.

Just read what you typed before hitting <Enter>, and get an illuminated keyboard if you type in the dark.

Neat idea .. but I don't think it can be implemented in a practicle manner.

Only thing I can see is "auto convert" that when you type and submit it changes the text for you on commonly misspelled words after it's sent.

Maybe there could be a new language "Proper"
WTS and things like that would be the same, but instead of seeing u and things like that, you'd see 'you' and 'Laughing out loud' or things like that.
And if someone did complete gibberish like:

you could get something witty. Or just get the message that says 'gibberish' Everyones happy.

Forget the spell-check, and flip on the light switch..problem solved.
